In the best-selling book Think And Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill explores recurring themes and principles that he noticed across all the hundreds of people he interviewed.
Today I want to explore the 30 Principles of Failure, before going through the 13 Principles of Success in more detail over the next 4 blogs.
Once understood, you will be able to use these principles to guide you to your own success. Push through your limiting beliefs (which you’ll find will fall into one or a few of today’s principles of failure!), and start living the life you want to live.
So, lets go and take a look!
The 30 Major Principles of Failure
Napoleon Hill highlights these 30 as the major causes of failure, but he does also recognise there are many, many more.
These are the 30 that this post will focus on, how many of them affect you?
- Unfavourable hereditary background
- Lack of a well-defined purpose in life
- Lack of ambition to aim above mediocracy
- Insufficient education
- Lack of self-discipline
- Ill health
- Unfavourable environmental influences during childhood
- Procrastination
- Lack of persistence
- Negative personality
- Lack of controlled sexual urge
- Uncontrolled desire for something for nothing
- Lack of a world defined power of decision
- One or more of the six basic fears
- Wrong selection of a mate in marriage
- Overcaution
- Wrong selection of associates in business
- Superstition and prejudice
- Wrong selection of a vocation
- Lack of concentration of effort
- The habit of indiscriminate spending
- Lack of enthusiasm
- Intolerance
- Intemperance
- Inability to cooperate with others
- Possession of power that was not acquired through self-effort
- Intentional dishonesty
- Egotism and vanity
- Guessing instead of thinking
- Lack of capital
How many did you tick off? 5? 10? 22? Does that mean you are destined to fail?
Most certainly not!
To hear more about each of these causes of failure, check out this video.
Am I Destined To Fail Because Of My Demographics?
All these are reasons to fail, yes. But they can also be seen as adversities to overcome! That is your choice.
You can either wallow in them, poor me, I can’t do the thing I want because I’m blah blah blah. OR you can see them as something to overcome and use as a steppingstone to reach your greatness!
How many great people are celebrated around the world for overcoming adversities? The Olympic Athlete who was told they’d never walk again. The black kid who became a President. A drug addict who was dead at one point who now helps others to create the same 7 figure income they now enjoy. The school dropout who started a globally acclaimed tech company.
There are hundreds. And do you think they struggled to get the success they now have? Of course they did!
Many of them have not been shy in sharing their life stories. Being told they weren’t good enough. That they wouldn’t succeed because of their skin colour or where they come from. That they would amount to nothing because they failed at school.
But the overriding story is that they pushed through, kept getting back up whenever they were knocked down, and kept going until they succeeded.
And you can to.
The full sequence of quotes and one minute reels that detail the 30 principles of failure and 13 principles of success are all held in this playlist.
Stay tuned for the next 4 blog posts to learn in more detail the principles of success that can make any number of failures redundant.
