So do you have higher faculties?

OK, lets start easy… Can you hear, smell, see, taste, touch? Then you are an animal. A horse, dog, cat, pig, bird… Oh wait, we are animals, but we have something extra that sets us aside.

Our Higher Faculties!

It is only our mind that sets us aside from a dog or a horse or any other animal on Earth. And our higher faculties are part of our conscious mind.

We learn about the five physical senses in school that we share with the rest of the animal kingdom. But we are not taught about our higher faculties. So you can be excused for not knowing what they are or how to use them effectively. Very few people do.

BUT!

Ignorance is not a valid excuse. You are still responsible for your life, actions, behaviours and thoughts.

If you keep reading, you will not be able to claim ignorance any longer! But you will also be able to start developing your higher faculties in order to progress your life.

What Are Our Higher Faculties?

Every other creature on Earth blends in with their environment. They are conditioned to blend in and survive. They have no higher purpose than to survive and reproduce.

However, humans can create any environment we want using our faculties.

Exploring and strengthening these faculties greatly improves our chances of creating and enjoying the life we want. So, as well as explaining each one in turn, I will give ideas on how you can strengthen them to start using them more effectively.

REASON

Our faculty of reason is what we use to think. To analyse, compare, and evaluate ideas. We take in information from our outside world through our senses, mix this with information we already hold and then create thoughts and ideas.

Reasoning is the primary way we choose. We use it in every choice we make by weighing up all the information we have to make a decision. Be aware though, you can only make decisions based on the information you have now. You cannot predict the future so make decisions based on what you know now. You can always make another decision later on!

Our reasoning faculty also allows us to create new ideas. Ideas not thought about by anyone else. Ideas that we can use to excel ourselves and civilisation forward in life, or that we can ignore and let pass us by.

A Tip for Developing Your Reason Faculty

Practice Being UNreasonable.

Most people think being unreasonable means doing something that upsets or disappoints someone else. Going against the crowd and following our own ideas. But, if we don’t go against the grain, we are stifling or sacrificing our own dreams and goals. We make a choice to not do something out of fear. Fear of disappointing someone. Being laughed at. Fear of going against the crowd or disrupting the status quo.

This is not being unreasonable. Unreasonable is sacrificing your life to keep someone else happy. This will only lead to your misery and frustration.

Neuroscience has shown that we use only about five percent of our brain. So, venture into unchartered territories and follow your dreams!

Write down the ways you are holding back on going for (or even acknowledging) what you really want in life because you’re afraid it might be unacceptable or impossible.

Then, relax and come up with a list of what you REALLY want.

Now think of new ideas and strategies that will get what you want. And ignore that inner paradigm that says you are being selfish or unreasonable! You are not. You advance everyone around you when you advance yourself.

INTUITION

Intuition is the small voice inside that speaks your truth. Some call it our sixth sense, but unlike the other senses which can only be maintained or degrade, intuition can be developed. It is your ability to read the energy of others, to learn all about who they are without them saying a word.

As you learn to turn down the volume of the noise around you and the voice of your paradigm (your other inner voice, covered in another post), and turn up the volume of your intuition, your life will become fuller. You will feel more connected to others.

A Tip for Getting In Touch With Your Intuition

Stop and listen.

It’s hard to tune in to your inner wisdom when you’re constantly busy.

So, take some time each day to slow down and be more open to your higher self. If you’re looking for an answer to a question, or have a decision to make, start looking inside yourself for the answers before you choose which path to take.

Intuitive messages are subtle and can fade from your conscious mind very quickly. So, write them down or record them immediately even if you can’t act on them right away.

WILL

Will is what we use to focus our attention. Many people have trouble staying focused, and they bounce around from one thing to another, and never finish anything. It is a very distracting world we live in, so this is not surprising! Phones, TVs, people, internet, notifications, busy lives…

The will, used properly, as it was designed to be used, is really what we think of as sustained concentration. What a person concentrates on, they think about. What they think about, they become.

A Tip for Enhancing your Will

Light a candle or put a spot on the wall opposite your favourite chair. Practice focusing on the flame or the spot for as long as possible. When your mind wanders off, as it will do, don’t beat yourself up! Once you notice it has wandered off, simply guide it back to the spot or the flame.

Do this every day for a few minutes at a time and build up the length of time each day. This teaches your mind to focus on one thing, and this skill can then translate to other areas of your life.

MEMORY

“Everyone has a photographic memory. Some people just don’t have any film.”

Anonymous

While you may see that as just an amusing quote, it’s true!

Consider that we’ve all got a perfect memory. We just need to train our mind properly to realise it. We’re constantly telling ourselves that we have a bad memory. We can’t remember people’s names, or what we did yesterday. But the more we say it, the more we believe it, and the more we do not practice using it. Our paradigm disallows us to use it effectively because it believes we have a bad memory.

Some people can learn to memorise religious books, or long sequences of numbers. Whole packs of cards, or phone numbers. These people have no more skill than everyone else except for the fact that they have developed their memory to a greater extent.

A Tip for Developing Your Memory

Use your senses.

The more senses you involve when you learn or do something new, the easier it is to remember it.

For example, if you want to remember someone’s name, it may help to look them in the eye when you repeat their name and offer a handshake. That will engage four out of your five senses.

IMAGINATION

Your imagination is incredibly powerful. It allows you to create something out of nothing. It’s what you use to take an idea, something that is non-physical, and turn it into something physical.

We all use our imagination to create things, experiences, and circumstances in our lives. However, many times we unconsciously use it the wrong way by imagining bad things happening to us or other things we don’t want. The dreaded what ifs… The images we think of about a conversation we have to have later. Or what mess we are going to walk into at home.

The key is to learn to use your imagination to create the experiences that you want to happen in your life. Focus on the images of the life you want to live. Not the images of the things you don’t want.

A Tip for Using Your Imagination in a Positive Way

Daydream!

Daydreaming is more deliberate than merely dreaming, and that makes it more effective in opening your mind to possibilities.

“They who dream by day are cognizant (mindful / aware) of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”

Edgar Allan Poe

So, take a break from your daily tasks each day to relax and let your mind wander.

What would you do if you turned your annual income into your monthly income?

What would a perfect day look like for you?

Who would make an ideal life partner?

Amuse yourself by speculating on ways you would like to see your life improve, and it will soon become a habit. And one day your daydreams may become your reality.

PERCEPTION

Perception controls what you become aware of in your environment, and how you choose to see it. It has both conscious and subconscious mind functions.

Subconsciously you create ‘rose-tinted’ glasses that you see the world through. These glasses are based on your inner beliefs, stereotypes, experiences or ideas that make up your paradigm. But there is always another way to see any situation or person! And you can choose how to look at something by making conscious choices.

There is polarity in most everything – front/back, up/down, in/out, and good/bad. The good might not always be in the thing itself, but what comes from it. You can only focus on one thing at a time, but you can choose to cycle through different points of views.

A singular perception in your life can prohibit your growth. A different one can exponentially expand it. Keep shifting your position until you find that one, then stay there.

A Tip for Developing Your Perception

Write a number 6 on the floor, table or other surface. Now go to the other side, what do you see? A 9. You are right regardless of which way you look at it! Practice being open to other points of view as there is not always just one that is valid.

You Need To Work From The Inside Out, Not The Outside In

To achieve your goals and dreams you need to stop focusing on external facts. Things you see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. Even if you consider them to be good.

Thinking from the outside in limits you to focussing on what you’ve achieved in the past and what you have around you now. You can only see what is there now and what has been before.

Start thinking from the inside out.

Use your mental faculties, starting with imagination to decide what you want and build the picture in your mind. Then use your will to keep your attention there. By focusing on this image everyday you create a new memory for your subconscious to store. And it doesn’t know that it is imagined, it will act on it as if it is real!

Every day you then use your perception to find the good in everything and everyone you see. Your reasoning faculty can also help with this as you reason where the good is and why it is good. Add your intuitive feelings, that see and feel the energy around you, to your reasoning to provide more information.

It’s listening to and acting on the voice inside and seeing the good in everything.

It’s creating future memories and continually seeing and feeling like the person you want to be.

Mind doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined so imagine the things you want, see yourself with them and allow yourself to feel how you will feel when you have them.

What Will Developing My Higher Faculties Do For Me?

Each time you do these things, you plant your desire in the garden of your subconscious mind. With increasing repetitions, the image becomes fixed there.

And then, by law, it’s only a matter of time before it moves into form.

Unlike the other species on this wonderful planet, we are not mere spectators in an objective world. We are co-creators involved in forming not only what we experience, but also how we experience it.

If you want any help in developing any of your faculties, I hosted an interactive 5-day workshop in November 2022. There were interactive activities to complete and lots of helpful insights. Each video follows on from the next by clicking the card at the end of each video. I hope you find them useful!
