What Is Blue Monday?

Blue Monday refers to a day in January that is said to be the most depressing day of the year. This year it was yesterday. Did you notice??

The idea of Blue Monday was popularised by a press release from a holiday company in 2005. It claimed to have calculated the day using a formula that took into account factors such as weather, debt levels, and the amount of time since Christmas.

However, the formula and the concept of Blue Monday has been widely discredited by scientists and mental health experts. They say there is no evidence to support the idea that any one day is inherently more depressing than any other.

Even though there is no one day more depressing than any other… Many people still give up on their goals and lose their enthusiasm at some point in January… But why?

Why do People Give Up On Their Goals Regardless Of Blue Monday?

There are many reasons why people give up on their goals. And, while they may not feel like it at the time, they are all a choice.

Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Difficulty or lack of motivation: A goal may be too difficult or not motivating enough to sustain effort over time.
  • Lack of planning or structure: Without a plan or structure in place, it can be easy to lose sight of the goal and become demotivated.
  • Life changes: Life events such as job loss, moving, or a change in family circumstances can make it difficult to continue working towards a goal.
  • Fear of failure: People may give up on a goal because they are afraid of failing. Which can be demotivating and discouraging.
  • Limited resources: A lack of time, money, or other resources can make it difficult to achieve a goal.
  • Distractions: Distractions such as social media, TV, or video games! They take away focus from the goal, and make it hard to accomplish.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Setting unrealistic goals or expecting immediate results can be a recipe for disappointment and quitting.
  • Lack of support: People may give up on a goal if they do not have the support of friends, family, or a community.

It’s important to note that the reasons for giving up on goals may vary from person to person. But understanding the reasons why one might quit can help to prevent it.

So What Can You Do To Avoid Giving Up?

First off, make sure you have a goal that is something you REALLY want in your life! If you are not sure how to do this, or if your goal is worthy of you, then check out this previous post. I am also happy to have a chat to discuss your ideas!

But for this blog, here are ten tips to help you stay committed to your goals:

  1. Set Specific and Realistic Goals: Clearly define what you want to achieve and ensure your goals are attainable and realistic for you.
  2. Break Goals into Smaller Steps: Divide your goal into manageable tasks or milestones. This makes the process less overwhelming and helps track progress.
  3. Create a Plan: Develop a detailed plan with deadlines for each step, so you stay organised and focused.
  4. Stay Flexible: Life happens! — be prepared to adjust your plan without giving up on your goal.
  5. Track Progress: Regularly monitor your progress to stay motivated and celebrate small wins along the way.
  6. Visualise Success: Imagine how achieving your goal will feel and what benefits it will bring to keep your motivation high.
  7. Find Support: Share your goals with friends, family, or a mentor who can encourage you and hold you accountable.
  8. Stay Consistent: Build habits that align with your goals and work on them regularly, even in small amounts.
  9. Overcome Setbacks: Accept that obstacles are part of the journey. Learn from failures and use them as opportunities to grow.
  10. Reward Yourself: Celebrate milestones and accomplishments to reinforce positive behaviour and stay motivated.

By maintaining focus, adapting to challenges, and remembering your “why,” you can stay on track and achieve your goals.
