What Is Mindset And Why Is It Important?

Mindset as defined by, Carol Dweck, author of a variety of books on mindset and growth, is:

“A mindset is a series of self-perceptions or beliefs people hold about themselves. These determine behaviour, outlook and mental attitude.”

It is ultimately defined by our paradigm. The thing inside each of us, built from our genetics, beliefs, and environment, that controls all our habitual behaviour. Paradigms also create our self-image and self-perception, and therefore set our attitude.

We cannot outperform our self-image, but we can change our mindset. This upgrades our paradigm and, in turn, our self-image.

Carol Dweck’s Work

Carol Dweck is an acclaimed psychologist and widely published author. Her work has built on the theory of neuroplasticity. This is the brain’s ability to continue to form new connections into adulthood, after it has been damaged, or when it is stimulated by new experiences.

Her work supports the idea that you can adopt a growth mindset at any time of life.

I will cover growth and fixed mindset in a future blog post.

Why Mindset is Important

It affects every single part of our lives including:

  • Our relationships
  • Career
  • Family
  • Business
  • Health
  • Happiness

It is integral to everything we do!

Holding a particular mindset can also affect your ability to learn new things. To even try new things! If you have low self-confidence and a mindset that you are not good enough, then you will not even consider trying something that you have never done before. And if you are put in a situation where you could try, your paradigm will cripple you with hundreds of what ifs and make you physically uncomfortable.

Mindset also affects how much progress you make in any given undertaking, and how you build confidence in your abilities.

How Does It Affect All These Things?

Your mindset comes from your beliefs, environment, thoughts and self-perception. You cannot outperform your self-perception as that is how you see yourself. If you believe you are shy, then you will be struck with uncontrollable fear when you try to do something that requires a lot of confidence. To do the thing that requires confidence, you must first think of yourself as, and fully believe that, you are confident.

Mindset is Important for Success

Success has very little to do with talent, intelligence, education, or luck. People who have no formal qualifications can become just as successful as others or even more so. And the same in reverse. People with talent and a good education aren’t preordained to succeed.

Same as the old adage of you have to work hard to win. It doesn’t matter how hard you work if your mindset is not right!

How Is Your Mindset?

a woman on the bed holding a pencil and notebook thinking

Are you able to give yourself a command and follow it? Or do you let yourself off the hook for the tiniest of reasons? Are you persistent? Do you look for every and any opportunity to increase your knowledge and hone your skills? Do you believe that you can do it?

Your mindset will dictate your level of success in your chosen undertakings. If you have a negative mindset (I can’t… I’m not good enough… Its OK for them they were given everything on a plate…) you will not be successful regardless of how hard you work!

However, if you can build a positive mindset (I can… will… I understand… I am…) then your success will come regardless of how hard you work. Even quicker if you work smarter instead of harder!
