Cultivating The Sage Powers : The Empathise Power
In this series, I am exploring the Positive Intelligence (PQ) Approach created by Shirzad Chamine. The last blog introduced the Sage Powers, and today we start looking at the first one, Empathise.
In Shirzad Chamine’s PQ Approach, the Sage Powers offer a refreshing counterbalance to the internal Saboteurs that undermine our confidence and clarity. One of the five core Sage Powers is Empathise. A transformative force that empowers us to connect deeply with others and with ourselves.
Empathy is more than a feeling. It’s a way of being that enables us to understand, feel, and respond to the emotional experiences of others. Through the Empathise power, we unlock a gateway to emotional intelligence, harmonious relationships, and compassionate leadership.
What Is the Empathise Sage Power?
The Empathise Sage Power is the ability to recognise and relate to others’ emotions, offering presence, understanding, and support. This Sage Power helps us:
- Build meaningful, authentic relationships.
- Foster trust, connection, and emotional safety.
- Engage in supportive communication and mutual respect.
- Embrace diversity and broaden our worldview.
By tuning in to another’s emotional state, we respond with compassion rather than judgement. This nurtures unity, emotional well-being, and psychological safety in all aspects of life. From relationships to leadership and community involvement.
Why Is Empathy So Important?
The Empathise Power is essential for:
- Building Relationships: Genuine empathy strengthens interpersonal bonds, creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
- Effective Communication: Empathy fosters better listening, more constructive conversations, and improved conflict resolution.
- Emotional Intelligence: Understanding others boosts your own self-awareness, compassion, and emotional growth.
- Inclusive Communities: Empathy nurtures inclusivity by encouraging acceptance of different perspectives, fostering a sense of belonging.
It also has societal benefits, promoting collective compassion, cooperation, and understanding. Qualities that are especially needed in today’s polarised world.
How to Cultivate the Empathise Sage Power
Building your Empathise Power is a process of daily intention and awareness. These practical strategies can help:
- Practice Active Listening
Be fully present. Listen with your whole self. Your ears, eyes, heart, and body. Resist the urge to interrupt or form responses while the other person is speaking. - Try Perspective-Taking
Deliberately imagine how someone else might be thinking or feeling in a situation. This helps shift your focus from judgement to curiosity. - Stay Curious and Open-Minded
Ask questions, seek understanding, and welcome different worldviews. Curiosity widens your empathic capacity. - Validate Emotions
Let others know their emotions are acknowledged and accepted. Even if you don’t fully relate to their experience. - Avoid Judgement
Create safe environments for expression by suspending judgement and letting go of assumptions. - Foster Self-Compassion
Being kind to yourself enhances your ability to be kind to others. Empathy starts within. - Read Widely and Engage in Storytelling
Books, films, and personal narratives expose you to lives unlike your own. Enhancing empathy through shared humanity. - Look for Daily Opportunities
Whether it’s a friend, family member, colleague, or stranger. Show understanding and kindness as a daily practice.
Try the “Child Visualisation” Empathy Game
Chamine recommends a powerful exercise to deepen your access to empathy:
“Visualise yourself as a child in a memory or picture where your essence shines. This triggers empathy for your true self. To generate empathy for someone else, especially during conflict, visualise them as a child in their pure essence. It shifts your perception from judgement to compassion.”
This exercise helps activate your Sage Brain and shifts you out of the Saboteur mindset. It’s especially useful when dealing with difficult emotions or challenging interactions.
What Do You Think?
Empathy is a Sage Power that connects us to the essence of who we are and strengthens our bonds with others. It’s a skill that brings emotional depth, unity, and inner peace. By cultivating empathy, we:
- Develop authentic relationships.
- Improve communication.
- Enhance emotional intelligence.
- Create more compassionate communities.
When used alongside the other Sage Powers in the PQ Approach, empathy becomes a force for healing, growth, and resilience.
In the next blog post, we’ll explore the Explore and Innovate Sage Powers. How curiosity and creativity are key tools for personal transformation.
