Cultivating The Sage Powers : Tapping into Inner Wisdom and Empowering Possibilities

In this series, I am exploring the Positive Intelligence (PQ) Approach created by Shirzad Chamine. In the past few blogs, I covered the Master Saboteur and all nine of its accomplices. And in this post, we are moving on to look at the Sage Powers.

In Shirzad Chamine’s PQ Approach, the concept of Sage Powers complements our understanding of the Saboteurs within our inner world. While the Saboteurs represent limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours rooted in survival mode, the Sage Powers symbolise inner wisdom, positive emotions, and authentic self-leadership.

Your Sage is the part of you that handles challenges with clarity, calmness, and resilience. It enables you to respond, not react. Tapping into creativity, compassion, and purpose. It’s not something you have to earn; it already lives within you.

What Are the Sage Powers?

Shirzad Chamine describes the Sage as living in a different part of the brain. The middle prefrontal cortex and the empathy circuitry. This area is responsible for:

  • Empathy
  • Gratitude
  • Curiosity
  • Creativity
  • Calm, focused action

Unlike the Saboteurs, who flood the brain with stress-induced cortisol, activating the Sage releases feel-good endorphins.

The five Sage Powers are:

  1. Empathise – builds emotional connection, kindness, and compassion.
  2. Explore – encourages curiosity, learning, and personal growth.
  3. Innovate – allows creative problem-solving and fresh ideas.
  4. Navigate – connects with inner values to make wise choices.
  5. Activate – inspires value-driven action and personal agency.

The Sage Perspective: Seeing with Wisdom

The Sage Perspective is a mindset that rises above reactive patterns. It allows you to:

  • Step back from mental noise and automatic behaviours
  • Respond with wisdom rather than fear
  • See the bigger picture and find meaning in adversity
  • Tap into emotional intelligence and deeper truths

From this place, you can lead a more conscious and empowered life.

How to Cultivate Your Sage Powers

Building your Sage Powers isn’t a one-time task. It’s an ongoing practice. Here are some practical ways to activate and strengthen them:

  1. Self-Awareness and Reflection
Regularly check in with your thoughts and emotions. Practise mindfulness to become more aware of mental patterns that sabotage or empower.
  2. Embrace Curiosity
Ask questions. Explore new ideas. Stay open to different perspectives. Curiosity drives both the Explore and Innovate powers.
  3. Practice Empathy and Compassion
Put yourself in others’ shoes. Listen with presence. This helps build the Empathise power and deepens connection.
  4. Strengthen Emotional Intelligence
Learn to identify and manage emotions, both yours and others’. Emotional intelligence fuels Navigate and Empathise.
  5. Trust Your Intuition
Your gut feeling often knows before your logical brain catches up. Tuning in helps access the Navigate power.
  6. Engage in Creativity
Whether through problem-solving, journaling, or artistic hobbies, allow yourself space to innovate and imagine.
  7. Take Purposeful Action
Clarify your values, set aligned goals, and take action, no matter how small. This activates the power of intentional, value-based living.
  8. Seek Wisdom from Others
Learn from mentors and role models who exemplify Sage qualities. Their guidance can help you grow faster and deeper.

Why the Sage Powers Matter

Cultivating your Sage Powers allows you to live more authentically and make better decisions. Unlike the Saboteurs that keep you stuck in fear or judgment, your Sage helps you grow, create, connect, and lead with clarity.

From this empowered place, you can:

  • Respond to adversity with calm and purpose
  • Make wiser decisions aligned with your values
  • Build stronger, more compassionate relationships
  • Unlock your potential and contribute meaningfully to the world

Final Thoughts

Recognising and nurturing your Sage Powers is central to the PQ Approach. It’s how you shift from inner conflict to inner clarity, from reactivity to resourcefulness. The Sage doesn’t erase difficulty. It helps you navigate it with strength, perspective, and grace.

What Do You Think?

In the next three blogs, we’ll explore each of the five Sage Powers in more depth: what they look like in real life, how to cultivate them further, and how they can transform the way you live and lead.
