Have You Ever Tried A Time Management Tip That Worked… For A While?

Maybe you:

  • downloaded a new planner
  • tried waking up earlier
  • followed a structured routine
  • or tested a popular productivity method

And at first, it helped.

You felt organised. In control. Productive.

But then… something shifted.

Life got busy. Motivation dipped. The system stopped working.

And you were back where you started, wondering:

“Why can’t I stick to this?”

The Problem Isn’t That Time Management Tips Are Useless

Let’s be fair.

Some time management tips can be helpful.

They can:

  • give structure to your day
  • help you plan ahead
  • create a sense of control

But the problem is this:

They often treat the symptom, not the cause.

They focus on organising time… without addressing what’s actually affecting how you use it.

Why Time Management Tips Often Fall Short

There are a few key reasons why these tips don’t always work long-term.

1. They Assume You Have Full Control Over Your Time

Most advice is built on the idea that you can fully plan and control your day.

But in reality:

  • things change
  • interruptions happen
  • unexpected demands show up

And when your plan breaks…

It can feel like you’ve failed.

2. They Focus on Doing More, Not Doing What Matters

A lot of time management advice is about:

  • fitting more in
  • being more efficient
  • maximising every minute

But more isn’t always better.

Sometimes, it just leads to:

  • overwhelm
  • pressure
  • burnout

3. They Ignore Your Energy Levels

You can plan your day perfectly on paper…

But if your energy is low, it won’t matter.

Because:

  • focus drops
  • tasks feel harder
  • progress slows down

And suddenly, your “perfect plan” doesn’t feel so perfect. It feels more omninous and demanding instead.

4. They Rely on Motivation

Some strategies work brilliantly… when you feel motivated.

But motivation isn’t consistent.

And when it dips:

  • routines fall apart
  • plans get ignored
  • habits break

5. They Don’t Adapt to Real Life

Many systems are rigid.

They expect your days to look the same.

But real life doesn’t work like that.

And when a system can’t flex, it eventually fails.

What Time Management Tips Do Get Right

It’s not all bad.

There are elements worth keeping.

For example:

Planning ahead helps

Having a rough idea of your day creates direction.

Prioritising matters

Knowing what’s important prevents wasted effort.

Structure can reduce overwhelm

A simple framework can make things feel more manageable.

The key is not to throw everything away…

But to build on what works, and fix what doesn’t.

A Better Approach: Focus on What You Can Actually Control

Instead of trying to manage time…

Shift your focus to what sits within it.

1. Manage Your Energy

Your energy determines how effectively you can use your time.

High energy:

  • better focus
  • faster progress
  • clearer thinking

Low energy:

  • slower work
  • more distractions
  • more effort required
Simple ways to improve it:
  • take short breaks before you feel exhausted
  • get enough rest where possible
  • notice when you work best

2. Strengthen Your Focus

Even a short burst of focused work can outperform hours of distracted effort.

Simple ways to improve it:
  • work in short focus blocks (30–60 minutes)
  • reduce notifications
  • keep your environment simple
A helpful question:

“What is the most important thing I need to focus on right now?”

3. Build Consistency (Not Perfection)

You don’t need to have perfect days.

You need to have consistent ones.

Simple ways to improve it:
  • start small
  • make tasks easy to begin
  • focus on showing up, not doing everything

How to Make Time Management Tips Actually Work

Some time management strategies can work, so here’s how to make them more effective:

✔ Keep them flexible

Your plan should support your day, not control it.

✔ Adjust based on your energy

Don’t force yourself into a rigid schedule.

Work with your natural rhythm where possible.

✔ Focus on fewer things

Less really is more.

✔ Expect imperfection

Things will go off track.

That doesn’t mean the system failed, it means you’re human.

The Real Shift That Changes Everything

Instead of asking:

“How can I manage my time better?”

Try asking:

“How can I use my energy, focus, and habits more effectively?”

This puts you back in control.

Because those are things you can actually influence.

You Don’t Need a Better System

It’s easy to believe that the next planner, app, or method will fix everything.

But more often than not…

You don’t need a better system.

You need a better approach.

Where to Go From Here

If this has resonated with you, you’ll likely find this next step really valuable.

I recently delivered a talk that explores this idea in more depth:

“What if lack of time isn’t the issue?”

It challenges the way we think about time, and offers a fresh perspective on what actually makes a difference.

What Do You Think?

Time management tips aren’t the problem.

But on their own… they’re not the solution either.

Because productivity isn’t about squeezing more into your day.

It’s about:

  • using your energy wisely
  • focusing on what matters
  • showing up consistently

And when those are in place…

You’ll find that time starts to feel very different.
